Chinese EVs in Europe: The 'Nobody Buys Them' Myth Busted

2026-10-13

The stereotype still circulates in distributor WhatsApp groups: European buyers won't touch Chinese EVs. They are a fad, a low-quality bargain, a tariff away from disappearing. The 2026 numbers say the opposite, and they say it loudly.

In the first five months of 2026, three Chinese brands each outsold Tesla in pure-EV-leaning Europe. BYD moved 135,307 units, SAIC 141,490, Chery 122,843 - all above Tesla's 118,068 (ACEA). This is not a niche. It is the front of the pack.

The Paris Motor Show that opened this week makes the point visual. More than 22 Chinese brands filled the halls, debuting fastbacks, flagship SUVs and tech flagships - cars priced to sit next to legacy premium names, not beneath them. A fad does not book 22 booths at the world's toughest auto show.

Brand trust is now data-backed, not assumed. BYD has led Britain's pure-EV sales for three straight years; recognition across the big European markets keeps climbing. The buyer who still treats "Chinese EV" as a red flag is arguing with the sales chart, not the market.

For an importer, the myth-buster has a commercial edge. The brands worth a long-term channel are the ones with proven European volume AND a local service network - because trust, once earned in data, compounds into repeat purchase. Back those. Skip the ones resting only on a low sticker and no local footprint; their trust gap is a future service complaint.

The uncomfortable truth for the skeptics: the "nobody buys them" story died in 2026. The question is no longer whether Europeans buy Chinese EVs. It is which Chinese EV brand your market will buy from you.

So before you write off a Chinese brand as untrusted - have you actually checked its European sales line, or are you repeating last year's stereotype?
